Foundation Issues
Foot arch collapse triggers a cascade of compensatory problems: knee caving in, hip joint internal rotation, and forward pelvic tilt that collectively prevent proper glute contraction, making barefoot training or barefoot shoes essential for maintaining proper ground contact during all lower body exercises.
Stiff hip flexors (specifically the iliopsoas) mechanically prevent glute activation, requiring Bulgarian split squats with upright torso as a warm-up (30 reps per side) to simultaneously stretch hip flexors and engage glutes using a foam roller for balance if needed.

Hip Thrust Execution Strategy
Hip thrust technique must adapt to load intensity: with lighter weights (up to 70% max), use chin tuck, core engagement, and pelvic tilt to isolate glutes; with heavier weights, maintain neutral chin and prioritize hip extension over pelvic manipulation to avoid lower back strain.
Foot positioning in hip thrusts is critical for beginners who should keep feet parallel and focus exclusively on glute contraction rather than experimenting with toe angles before mastering the basic movement pattern.

Exercise Selection Problems
Squats, deadlifts, and lunges have misaligned force vectors at maximum glute contraction, causing lower back dominance and fatiguing other muscles before glutes reach failure, which leads to anterior pelvic tilt and chronic lower back pain rather than glute development.
The “Michael Jackson hip thrust” method (chin tucking + scooping the floor with hips for pelvic tilt) better isolates glutes but requires strong pelvic control and should only be used with up to 70% of maximum weight to prevent lower back pain from weak stabilization.
