In France, where high school students have been voicing their outrage for four weeks over poor educational conditions, another large-scale protest erupted on the 17th (local time).
This time, citizens—protesting against skyrocketing living costs and a sharp surge in fuel prices—took to the streets wearing high-visibility yellow vests, a nod to the “Yellow Vest” movement, a massive anti-government protest that began in 2018.
Demonstrations took place in 1,750 locations across the country, including Paris, Marseille, and Lyon, with the number of participants reaching 500,000.
Major city centers descended into chaos, with vehicles set ablaze, shops looted, and streets filled with tear gas and water cannons.
In Limoges, a small city in southwestern France, a 140-year-old town hall building was set on fire by protesters, causing its bell tower to collapse.
Department stores and luxury boutiques in the heart of Paris also became targets for looting.
Systemic Resource Mismanagement
France had 3,000 fully-paid regular teachers sitting idle without school assignments while students went 3-4 months without teachers in core subjects like French and math, revealing the crisis stems from administrative dysfunction rather than pure budget shortage.
Scale of Educational Collapse
Over 1/3 of France’s 3,700 high schools experienced protests with 6,877 arrests (86% minors) after students lost 15.4 million class hours (7.5% of total) due to teacher absences—equivalent to 1 missed class every 2 days.
Infrastructure Funding Gap
France needs €80 billion over 10 years (€8 billion annually) to renovate schools where 50%+ were built before 1970, but allocated only €3 billion over 5 years while simultaneously cutting €8.2 billion from local government budgets responsible for school facilities.
Counterproductive Austerity
The government eliminated 4,000 teaching positions in 2023 despite France having the second-highest student-to-teacher ratio in Europe (after Japan among OECD countries), prioritizing cost savings over addressing overcrowded classrooms and chronic teacher shortages.
Geographic Educational Inequality
Students in rural and suburban areas face compounded disadvantages through worse facilities, less teacher support, and allegedly discriminatory criteria in the new Parcoursup university admission system (replacing the transparent Baccalauréat-only system), sparking protests that originated in these marginalized regions.
